Worker profile: Sandra White
Today, I want to introduce the profile of Sandra White. She is a street cleaner. A street cleaner is someone who cleans the block for their welfare checks. They work without any training. I was so surprised about their work. They are treated so poorly. Before she does this job, she has a satisfaction work. But now Sandra is unhappy doing her job for several reasons. First, the supervisor does not respect them. Whatever bad situation she faces, the supervisors always treat workers rudely. They only want you to work. Second, the street cleaner has to hang their lunch bags on the handles of garbage that they push around all day. Their lunch always smells like garbage. Third, they are also told to pick up dead animals. Even though, they are not technically supposed to pick up them. Fourth, there are no health and safety rules for anything. What the supervisor says to do, you do. Fifth, the equipment that they use is often broken. It is difficult for their work. Finally, this job is just very hazardous to their health. The supervisors are always told that this job was not made to make you comfortable so that you can have that dependency from generation to generation. The street cleaners always work hard.
I was so surprised with their persistence; I was also surprised with the supervisor’s attitude. As we know, the United States is a free, equal country. We need to respect all people. Wherever they come from, whatever they do. The workers also use labor in exchange for their remuneration. If we cannot help them, at least we should learn to respect them. In addition, only we learn to respect them, they can work well. Only when we learn to respect them, can they find their self- worth.
